Chaplain Susan Canteen has provided chaplaincy services at Connecticut Valley Hospital for over 20 years. Chaplain Canteen provided services for individuals dealing with mental health and addiction issues. She served in a multifaceted role as a member of the CVH’s multidisciplinary healthcare team. She provided holistic support that extended beyond the purely medical and psychological concerns of both clients and staff The variety of services she performed benefited the clients, the staff and enhanced the overall quality of care for the individuals we served. Captain Canteen provided spiritual support, emotional comfort, and ethical guidance to patients, family and staff. She provides services on individual basis and group basis, she also provided bibles, religious literature to individuals. She collaborates with other community chaplaincy services to support the needs of clients who need support from other denominations. Her service helps individuals cope with stress, grief, existential concern, fostering a sense of hope and meaning which at times have significantly impacted the mental health and recovery journey of the clients during their hospitalized stay. She offered crisis intervention, grief and bereavement counseling. She was also an advocate for the clients, and sometimes that helps to bridge a gap between the patients and the mental health treatment team. She provided end of life/last rights services at bereavement times when clients passed away. Providing support for these clients on the unit, family and staff. Chaplin Canteen respected diversity, at times dealing with sensitive matters, supporting people from all religious faith, spiritual traditions, or sometimes no traditions, ensuring that care and respect for the patient and individuals at all times. Chaplin Canteen also was a great support for the staff providing crucial emotional, spiritual support and counseling. Her support helped mitigate staff burnout and the stress of working in a high stress environment. Chaplin Canteen professionalism, compassionate and caring nature whose specially trained skill set supports belief systems across faiths and cultures. The trust that she establishes with patients transfer to other members of the team and leads to better care and better outcome.

HopeLine Care Chaplaincy exists to meet people where they are, with prayer, presence, and practical care. We provide confidential, faith-informed support through virtual chaplaincy and rapid prayer responses, using Psychological First Aid when acute stress calls for grounding and next steps. Our services are interfaith-sensitive and accessible to individuals, families, caregivers, and helping professionals, including mediation when conflict needs a neutral guide. We commit to clear scope, timely follow-up, and referral to clinical or community resources whenever that is in your best interest.
